Description

Students will create their own drum with wood and packing tape over the course of this introductory workshop. This will allow them to create images that combine variety of colors, forms, and lines. Then, students will be briefly introduced to the world of drum orchestra and percussion, learning the fundamentals of rhythm and playing in time with other players under the direction of Master Drummer S-Ankh Rasa. This workshop is a great precursor to Cara Mía Theatre Co.'s residency, Drum Orchestra: Building Confidence Through Rhythm. S-Ankh Rasa studied in the music department at the University of California, Berkeley at age of 12. He furthered his studies at the San Francisco Conservatory at the age of 15. He has performed for many artists including The Temptations, Teena Marie, Debbie Allen/FAME TV show, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, MGM movie sound tracks, The Natalie Cole Christmas Special, Barry White, and Marvin Gaye. In recognition of his African heritage, Mr. Rasa has also studied traditional African music and dance focusing on the djembe and dundun drums and the kora (African harp).
