Description

When objects are placed directly onto a sheet of chemically coated light-sensitive paper, a silhouette materialized in the form of a vivid blue photogram known as a cyanotype. This historic photographic process takes place without the use of a camera! Nature with You is a hands-on printing project for young artists grades K - 5. Children view the work of botanist Anna Atkins, who introduced the cyanotype (blueprint) process to photography in the 19th century, then head outdoors to experiment with their own process of making prints using pre-treated papers, the sun, and objects found in nature. Students may also invite an adult family member and work collaboratively, if permitted by the school. All supplies included for projects.

Students Will

  • Literacy Connection: Blue Prints by Zeva Oelbaum ISBN:0847824322
  • View, examine, and talk abut the works of botanist Anna Atkins.
  • Expose and develop several cyanotype prints.
  • Learn how the amount of ultraviolet light exposure (such as sunlight) determines the color of the cyanotype and how an object's opacity will change the tone of the print.
