Japan‑in‑a‑Suitcase is a traveling educational program that introduces American children to Japanese people, cultural traditions, and contemporary life. A Japanese individual visits your classroom with a suitcase of Japanese objects and shares them with your students, engaging them in discussion and activities. The program encourages students to: 1) learn the geographic location and features of Japan and its relationship to the United States; 2) speak simple words in Japanese; 3) compare and contrast Japanese and American lifestyles; and 4) develop an awareness and appreciation of a different culture. Students will learn about Japanese housing and customs in the home (taking off shoes, different bathrooms, sleeping on a futon, etc.). They will also gain a better understanding of Japanese food, families, and transportation. Each child has the opportunity to learn about and practice Japanese manners.
