Description

Give your students an authentic taste of Japan! The Japan‑in‑a‑Suitcase program is an educational initiative that helps students experience Japanese culture, customs, and contemporary life. Choose among two topics that will ignite your students’ curiosity and open their minds to explore the world in which they live. Students will experience a Japanese picture show called kamishibai. It is a traditional form of Japanese storytelling that uses large pictures accompanied by a dramatic narration. This lesson also incorporates traditional aspects of Japanese culture, such as origami, that allowing students to receive a well-rounded view of Japan and Japanese life. The presentation includes a general introduction to Japan, including locating the country on a map; identifying the concepts of city, state, and country; and learning simple Japanese words and basic greetings. This course includes both pre-recorded learning materials and instruction through a virtual live stream. *Origami activity requires scissors, any letter size paper and pen.

Students Will

  • Learn the geographic location and features of Japan, including its relationship to Texas and the United States.
  • Speak simple Japanese greetings.
  • Experience kamishibai, traditional Japanese storytelling, and an origami activity with any letter size paper at home.
  • Develop an awareness and appreciation of a different culture.

Technical Needs: Internet access and school audio/visual equipment for viewing our program. For students joining from their own devices, they will need WiFi, a hotspot, or other internet access, including a screen and audio devices to hear the program.
Other Information: Maximum of two presentations per day.

Deadline: Please book at least 14 days/2 weeks before your requested date.
Cancellation Policy: Reschedule dates must be at least 10 days in advance. Cancellations must be received in writing at least 7 days prior to the date of the lesson. Your school (and/or Big Thought/LearningPartners if using LP funding) will be invoiced for the total cost if you fail to show for your program or cancel within 7 days of the scheduled date. We will do our best to accommodate any unprecedented circumstances, but we reserve the right to cancel or adjust programs as needed. The Japan America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth reserves the right to change these policies without notice.
