Description

Japan-in-a-Suitcase is a hands-on, interactive program that introduces American school students to Japan - its people, cultural traditions, and contemporary life. A Japanese individual visits your classroom with a suitcase of Japanese objects and shares them with your students, engaging them in hands-on activities. The program encourages students to: 1) learn the geographic location and features of Japan; 2) speak simple words in Japanese; 3) learn about cultural similarities and differences. The students will enjoy a Kamishibai presentation, a traditional form of Japanese storytelling that uses large pictures to accompany a dramatic narration. The lesson also incorporates traditional aspects of Japanese culture, such as children's songs(Pre-K only), origami (K - 2 only), and traditional clothing, allowing students to receive a well-rounded view of Japan and Japanese life.

Students Will

  • Learn the geographic location and features of Japan, including its relationship to Texas and the United States.
  • Speak simple Japanese greetings.
  • Experience kamishibai, traditional Japanese storytelling, and an origami activity with any letter size paper at home.
  • Develop an awareness and appreciation of a different culture.
