Description

Performed on the violin and bass, professional musicians use music and movement as a vehicle to reinforce literacy skills while introducing children to the elements of music. Pre-school aged children experience each letter of the alphabet through song, instrument demonstration and organized movement. There are counting exercises with the strings of the violin and bass, size and pitch comparison of the instruments, imaginary journeys using sound effects, demonstrating the concept of opposites and movement to musical cues. This 25-minute program is performed in the classroom so that the children have a more intimate experience with the instruments. Sample script: A is the first letter of the alphabet. It is also the name of one of our strings. Before we play, we tune our strings to the sound called “A”. Can you say “A” with me? Can you sing “A” with me? (musicians tune instruments) English and Language Arts TEKS 110.11K3 A B is for Bass. Not bass like the fish, but bass like the bass violin. Meet Bob, the Big Brown Bass. B is also for bow and bridge. The violin bow is what we hold in our right hand. Would girls put this bow in their hair? No, this bow is too long and made of wood and hair from the tail of a horse. The bridge holds our strings over the instrument. Can you walk across this bridge? No, but you can see the strings stretched over it. Can you hear what is the same and what is different when played by the violin and then by the bass? (each instrument plays a short tune with the bow crossing over the entire bridge) Social Studies TEKS 113.11, K 14A C is for Count. How many strings are on the violin? How many strings are on the bass? C is also for Clap. Can you clap four times? Let’s count and clap at the same time. Say, “One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four.” (Continue clapping while the bass plays along in rhythm with the steady beat of the clapping) Fine Arts TEKS 117.3 K4 A D is for Down. We play scales on our instruments. If you stand up tall, with your hands high in the air, you can slowly sink down to the floor as the bass comes down the scale. What word names this action? Listen for the steps of the scale and don’t put your hands on the floor before you hear the lowest note on the bass. How low can you go? (demonstrates difference between higher and lower) Fine Arts TEKS 117.3 K4 B English and Language Arts TEKS 110.11K5 A
