"You be the Architect" History Lab 2019-2020

This is an exciting experience to illustrate practical applications of symmetry, to see how technological advances change the city's landscape, and to use critical thinking to problem solve. After learning how Dallas' skyline has changed through the years students will participate in a range of hands-on activities to discover the first steps of a building, how skyscrapers work, why details matter, how to infer what a building is by its design, and create a building for the future.

Students Will

  • explore the concept of urbanization by planning a city layout
  • design a building floor plan using symmetry and balance and identifying needs and wants
  • build a skyscraper and learn about structural support
  • think about future buildings and inventions, and design a building for the future
  • infer what buildings are by its construction, building materials, and overall design


Dates: August 2019 to July 2020
Times: Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm.
Duration: History Lab is about 55 minutes long and can accommodate 40 students at a time. More than one lab can be done in a day. Add 1.5 hours for the gallery visit.
School Fee: Price Per Student: $7.00
Minimum Attendance: 20

Technical Needs: 1 adult is REQUIRED for every 10 students.
Other Information: ADULT ADMISSION: We allot one free adult for every ten students, any after that are the regular admission price of $10. Please arrive at the Museum on time. Account for traffic in downtown Dallas by leaving school earlier than initially planned. If you will be late, please call the Museum's front desk at 214-745-1100. The Museum requires one adult for every ten students. All adults and chaperones are expected to actively participate in the museum program by keeping students on task and engaged.

Deadline: Please book two weeks in advance.
Cancellation Policy: Cancellation Policy: Cancellations must be made a minimum of 2 weeks (10 business days) in advance. If you choose not to come on your scheduled day and have not rescheduled, your school or ISD will be responsible for 100% of the amount due for your trip. If your school or ISD is closed on the day of your trip due to inclement weather or other emergencies, we will make every effort to reschedule. If no make-up day is available, you will be refunded the cost of your program. Please understand that when you schedule a school program, the museum schedules staff and volunteers to make the program possible.
