"Hats in the Courtroom" Mock Trial 2019-2020

Time Frames
During School Day
Field Trip
1st, 2nd, 3rd, Talented/Gifted

Judge, bailiff, lawyers, witnesses, and jury members all “wear different hats” as they carry out their responsibilities in a courtroom. Imagine the excitement of sitting at the judge’s bench, keeping order in the court, presenting a case, giving testimony, or voting as a jury member to reach a verdict. Students learn about various roles in a fun way as they wear different hats in the 1892 courtroom and participate in a simple trial. Students may step up to the judge’s bench, tap the gavel, sit in the lawyer’s chair and jury box, and take the witness stand in this introduction to law and citizenship for younger grades. Students will also have the opportunity to make hats of their own to take home. *This program will be adapted for younger students. Some students MUST be able to read a basic script. Students are performing a basic mock trial (reading from a written script) and acting out the various participants inside a court case. They will serve as jury members who will deliberate and deliver a verdict to the court. This particular trial will focus on the concept of private property and importance of juries in evaluating evidence.

Students Will

  • experience Old Red's 1892 restored courtroom.
  • learn about the people and roles in a courtroom such as judge, bailiff, lawyer, court reporter, witness, and jury.
  • conduct a very basic mock trial to engage in the democratic process and learn vocabulary such as "bailiff", "order in the court", and "the verdict is".
  • Literacy Connection: A Story of Lawyers by Jacqueline J. Buyze, Esq. ISBN: 9781937406301
  • perform and act out various jobs inside a courtroom setting
