The dynamics of law and society take shape as students become active participants in a mock trial. From judge and bailiff to lawyers and jury, every student plays an active role in creating and analyzing a civil court case and understanding the important components of a civil trial. Students exercise their public speaking abilities and have a one of a kind opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills as they write opening statements, witness testimonies, and closing arguments. Their hard work is put to the test as a jury of their peers deliberates over the information presented and returns with a verdict. Students are performing a basic mock trial from a constructed script. They are acting out the various participants and positions in a courtroom setting. This particular mock trial covers the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and the concept of private property laws. Students will evaluate the circumstances of state versus federal law.
