Description
Choose a story: Rumplestiltskin, Princess and the Pea or Tortoise and the Hare. These timeless tales are brought to life featuring large-scale hand puppets and original songs. The start of the show explains how various sources are used to create the performance, including cultures with similar stories and plots, and how different reference materials are used to create the story. Students learn how to display appropriate audience behavior. Each story teaches important character lessons in a straight forward, yet gentle way. Themes include: the importance of being truthful, the power of perseverance and the value of not judging people by appearances. After the show, the audience is invited to a backstage look at the marvels of puppetry and the “how to” of creating a performance, including how mathematics is used to determine things like puppet size, stage dimensions, and the scale of props and buildings in the show. Students are invited to ask questions and to join a discussion on the use of music and movement in the performance, as well as the dramatic structure of the story.
Students Will
Hear songs developed to tell a particular story, and discuss those songs after the performance
Dialogue with performing artists and analyze aspects of the show
Trace the parallel stories of other cultures that correlate to the story that they are seeing, understanding that basic themes and plot lines have a cultural commonality
Follow oral directions that involve a short related sequence of actions
Experience an original performance, and the type of movements that are possible with hand puppets
Identify moral lessons as themes in well-known fables, legends, myths, or stories
Evaluate simple dramatic activities and performances
