Description

Kent offers a very exciting way to bring a traditional and popular Japanese art form to your classroom. Students explore the history of the kabuki theater of Japan while learning the basic movement techniques of the samurai (male) and onnagata (female), wearing kimono costumes and learning to gesture with fans - dramatically popping them open one-handed. In this interactive experience all students have the opportunitiy to dramatize a short scene from a traditional Japanese folktale such as Momotaro (The Peach Boy) or Issun Boshi (The One Inch Boy). As an option, a residency program is available in which each class will learn kabuki choreography and perform a Japanese folktale in full kimono and kumadori (makeup) in a one-of-a-kind event for fellow students or a PTA presentation.

Students Will

  • Literacy Connection: Kabuki, by Masakatusu Gunji, ISBN-10: 0870117327
  • wear Japanese kimono costumes and use hand fans
  • learn traditional Japanese Kabuki movement
  • dramatize a Japanese folktale
