Description

Characters wear period costumes and bring a variety of touchable props and supplies to lead students in a hands-on-activity from the 1800's. Students will learn the history and relevance of the craft/skill as they complete the item. Choose from: cowboy life, candle dipping, quilting, spinning, weaving, fibers, butter making, toys/games and many more. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have something in mind that is not listed here.Programs utilize a small group setting to allow for maximum student interaction. Many workshops combine science, math, history, economics, theater and/or art, and all boost background knowledge and vocabulary.

Students Will

  • Complete an item of their own by the end of class.
  • Compare/Contrast life in the 1800's to life now.
  • Participate in dramatic play by assuming roles of pioneer children. Several period props available for students to explore.
  • Glimpse pioneer life first hand and earn respect for the Pioneers and appreciation for modern technology.
  • See, smell, hear, touch, and do. Great for all learning styles.
  • Learn about history and importance of inventions related to the craft.
  • Literacy: A Pioneer Sampler: The Daily Life of a Pioneer Family in 1840, By: Barbara Greenwood, ISBN: 978-0395883938
