Description
An award-winning actor and seasoned teaching artist, Kent offers an exciting and interactive way to bring the traditional Japanese art form of Kabuki to your campus classroom or auditorium. Students will explore the history of the kabuki theater of Japan while learning the basic movement techniques of the samurai (male) and onnagata (female), wearing kimono costumes and learning to gesture with fans - dramatically popping them open one-handed. In this interactive experience all students have the opportunitiy to perform a traditional Japanese folktale such as Momotaro (The Peach Boy), Issun Boshi (The One Inch Boy, or the Japanese Tom Thumb) or a Kabuki version of Sleeping Beauty (the villain Maleficent is replaced with the Spider Queen). Students will select their roles, learn expressive movement sequences using costumes and hand fans, and rehearse and perform a short dramatic play. As an option, a residency program is available in which each class will learn kabuki choreography over a series of days/hours and perform a Japanese folktale in full kimono and kumadori (makeup) in a one-of-a-kind event for fellow students or a PTA presentation.
