Description

Recycling and decomposition come alive as students learn about the complex web of creatures in a compost bin! Learn about the Life of Litter and different ways we can make a difference. See a working compost pile, its complex food web and learn how it is used in the garden. Students will make their own compost in a bucket to take back to the classroom! Pre and post visit extension activities are available upon request. This option includes entrance into the Tropical Butterfly House. Scholarships available. Contact [email protected] for more info!

Students Will

  • Describe the make-up of a compost bin and its uses.
  • Identify inhabitants of a compost bin.
  • Apply the concepts of decomposition and recycling to the life cycle of everyday products, such as paper and Styrofoam.
  • Follow instructions to make their own compost in a bucket.

  • Sequence trash based on decomposition rates

Details

Dates: Weekdays
Times: Hourly, 10 am - 1 pm
Duration: 55 minutes. Allow additional time for the self-guided Butterfly House tour.
School Fee: $9 per child for program and Tropical Butterfly House. One adult for every 10 students is free! Additional adults are $10
Minimum Attendance: 10
Maximum Attendance: 50
Bilingual: Yes
Technical Needs: We will be outside! Bring hats and refillable water bottles!
Other Information: Can Accommodate up to 300 Students Per Day, 50-100 per hour. This program cannot be scheduled from September 28 - October 21, 2018.

Scheduling / Booking

Instructions: Please call the Booking Department at 214-428-7476 ext. 343 or email [email protected] to book your visit. Be prepared to provide your contact information, Voucher number, Approval Code, approximate number of students and program selection.
Deadline: Minimum 2 weeks before program date.
Cancellation Policy: Changes to number attending and cost of program may be made two weeks prior to program date. Any remaining balance is due two weeks before your scheduled visit date. If you need for any reason to reschedule your program you must contact the Booking Department at least two weeks before your scheduled visit in order for your deposit/payment to be applied to your new visit date. Rescheduling is available in the event of TDG equipment failures, power failures, school closings by ISD or inclement weather. If in doubt due to weather, please call the Education department to confirm weather conditions at the Gardens. Your program is only guaranteed at the scheduled start time noted in your voucher and TDG Invoice. TDG follows the DISD School Closing decisions for inclement weather. All payments are non-refundable. Refunds are ONLY available in the event of failures on the part of TDG (power outages, equipment malfunctions, etc.). We will do our best to accommodate late arrivals, but we reserve the right to cancel or adjust program.
