Fur Trapper and His Pelts

The fur trade was one of the earliest and most important industries in North America. The fur trading industry played a major role in the development of the United States and Canada for more than 300 years. This unique program allows students to visit with a fur trapper dressed in period clothing from the 1800’s. He will bring more than 30 pelts of non-domesticated animals commonly found in Texas during the 1800’s including an American Bison (commonly called buffalo) and Black Bear. He will discuss and allow the students to touch as many pelts as time allows. He will point out the distinctive physical traits of each animal and explain why that trait is important to the animal’s survival. He will also touch on topics such as predator/prey, nocturnal, extinction, dangers, etc. Program content is modified to fit grade level of students.If time allows a make-and-take craft may be added to the program for a small supply fee per student.

Students Will

  • Understand how pioneers used the available raw materials to meet their needs.
  • Hear why beavers were once almost extinct.
  • Learn about, see and touch pelts such as an American Bison (buffalo), Beaver, Bobcat and Black Bear.
  • Book: Endangered and Threatened Animals of Texas by: Linda Campbell ISBN:1885696043
  • Imitate animal sounds and actions.
  • Compare/contrast life in the 1800's to life now. Learn respect for the pioneers and appreciation for modern technology.
  • Learn science and history in a truly unique theatrical approach.


Dates: Any day of the week on first come-first serve basis, but calendar fills up quickly, especially the month of May.
Times: Program may be as early as 8:30 am.
Duration: Each presentation is about 30 minutes.1 adult per 25 students required to assist with program. Duration of program may be reduced to allow more students to attend. Ask Program Coordinator for details when scheduling the program.
School Fee: Flat Rate $265 includes two presentations (25 students per presentation for a total of 1 hour of programming). Shorter presentations may accommodate more students. Discount for additional presentations may be available.

Technical Needs: One large table to display pelts on and 1 chair; space for students to stand in semi-circle near the presenter. The presenter should remain in the same location for all programs. A shady spot outdoors is great for this program.
Other Information: 1 adult per 25 students required to assist with program. Program will be tailored to fit age group. Duration of program may be reduced to allow more students to attend. If fewer students attend, the duration of the program may be increased to allow for additional information and more interaction with the presenter. Deadline: 2 weeks notice requested; however, sometimes last minute requests can be accommodated.
Cancellation Policy: CANCELLATION POLICY: To cancel or reschedule an event, notice should be given at least 3 weeks prior to the date of the program (4 weeks notice needed for camps). Every effort to re-schedule the program will be made. However, rescheduling is sometimes impossible and a full refund will be given if notice is given at least 3 weeks (4 weeks for camps) in advance of a program. No refund can be issued without 3 weeks notice for general programs and 4 weeks notice for camps. RAIN POLICY FOR CAMPS: We cannot reschedule or cancel a camp because of rain. Please provide a place indoors where our presenters can move equipment inside to do demonstrations excluding tents, wagon and campfire. Please discuss possible options with the Texana Coordinator prior to camp. SCHOOL CLOSING DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER Schools should contact the Texana Program Coordinator when inclement weather (other than rain) is expected. When possible, we will try to reschedule program if prior notice is given. Please note that some of our presenters live a long distance from Dallas and will try to arrive as scheduled if the school is open and chose not to reschedule or cancel the program. However, we will not travel if road conditions are considered unsafe for the presenter and no refunds offered if the presenter cannot travel due to unsafe road conditions. If rescheduling is not possible and 48 hour notice is given, we will refund payment to the school. No refunds offered for school closings due to inclement weather unless 48 hour notice of cancellation is given.
After School Policy: AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM POLICY: A minimum of 2 students required in a class. Class may not occur with fewer than 2 students. Maximum number of students will vary with specific program. For example, some of the Pioneer Life Skill Demonstrations and Workshops may be limited to a maximum of 15 students. However, stage presentations may accommodate up to 200 students. In all cases, unless stated, we request at least 1 school-staff adult to be present per every 20 students. A few programs require additional adults. Adults are expected to participate in the program. If appropriate adult supervision is not provided, the program will not continue. Please verify minimum and maximum student and adult requirements prior to booking the program.
