Description

Hear the true story of Maya Angelou who triumphed over difficult circumstances and wrote about them--becoming a true poet of the people and advocate for civil rights. In this workshop we will explore how writing from personal experience and using figurative language can convey powerful thoughts.

Students Will

  • Learn a true story of poet and activist Maya Angelou by listening to a reading of Rise! From Caged Bird To Poet Of The People By Bethany Hegedus
  • Learn the importance of civic involvement and using your voice
  • Apply Comprehension Strategies to Text
  • Share their poems with other students
  • Write a poem about a personal experience using at least one metaphor or simile and illustrate it

Residencies of 10 sessions or more result in a printed anthology of students' work and the opportunity for students to show off newly developed skills in a public reading to friends and family.
Deadline: two weeks prior notice
Cancellation Policy: A minimum of 48 hours notice is required to cancel a scheduled date. If 48-hour notice is given, we will reschedule the date, based upon the availability of the Instructor. If 48-hour notice is not given, we will bill for the date scheduled and not reschedule the date.
After School Policy: At least one school representative/teacher must be present in the classroom at all times. 25 students maximum per class. Minor adjustments can be negotiated.
