Description

Join us as we use a combination of lessons, images, videos, and cooking demonstrations to explore the world of language arts. Students will discover the exciting world of language arts through cooking, health, and nutrition. Topics such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and active listening will be covered as students learn how to identify and deal with barriers to effective communication. The program discusses attitudes and choices concerning food and evaluates how they affect students while helping to build a vocabulary that will allow students to clearly and intellectually discuss their likes and dislikes in the culinary world. Students will be able to recognize new different types of text/vocabulary in the kitchen, such as recipes, menus, cooking books, ingredient lists, etc. We’ll learn to identify the purpose and message conveyed with food in different kinds of media, such as book publications, movies, advertising, and more. We’ll also discuss grammar, abbreviations, irregular verbs, and compound words. Activities like crosswords and ciphers assist students in making sense of their world while developing the skills to evaluate the healthier choices in their personal lives. Students will get to take a recipe, so they put to work their new learned skills. These fun programs help students understand what it is like to work with food and connect the skills they learn in the classroom. Volunteer audience participants may work with ingredients, equipment, and perform cooking techniques demonstrated by the Chef.

Students Will

  • Literacy Connection: The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution, Alice Waters, ISBN 0307336794
  • Use their listening, comprehension, and ability to follow a set of instructions tested by joining the instructor when making a recipe, using equipment and working with ingredients.
  • View various recipes, ads, menus and other forms of culinary literature to demonstrate and connect with informational, reference, or entertainment purposes of communication.
  • Develop a cooking vocabulary to enable students to have constructive description of foods they like and dislike to their parents.
  • Identify different parts of recipes and menus (along with other forms of culinary literature).
  • Through a lively presentation, storytelling, and listening attentively to recognize and distinguish how many forms of writings are used in the food world (cookbooks, magazines, blogs, online articles, coupons, menus and the food bill).
  • Participate in a food tasting of a demonstrated recipe (upon principal approval).
