Description

Stories are everywhere! Sharing stories about the everyday things that happen to us gives us a sense of culture, history, and personal identity. They also allow us to have an enjoyable shared experience with others. We can use illustrations to make our stories more understandable or to add additional details. In this workshop, students will listen to a beautifully illustrated and humorous story that honors the author’s culture and family. Participants will then write a story from their own personal experience and use the elements of space, color, and value to make an illustration.

Students Will

  • Apply comprehension strategies to text
  • Listen to the story Octopus Stew by Eric Velasquez
  • Share their stories with other students
  • Explore the use of space, color, and value in illustrations
  • Write a short story from their own personal experience
  • Illustrate their story using the elements of space, color, and value
