Delve into the rhythms of the world with Jamal Mohamed. Jamal demonstrates the music of the Middle East, Africa and Asia using authentic instruments, some which he created himself including flutes made from PVC pipe and drums made from clay. Students will be delighted to play the exotic percussion instruments, beating drums from Africa, shaking maracas from Latin America and striking a gong from China while learning how arithmetic, geography, history and physics relate to music. They will learn about the ancient cultures that have produced rich traditions of drumming and ceremonial music. Jamal will also show how music can be made using commonly found household objects. Students will have the opportunity to play percussion in a drum circle while experiencing the art of musical improvisation. Jamal has taught percussion at SMU for over 30 years and has performed world wide with appearances with Sting, Keb Mo and many other musical luminaries. Jamal Mohamed has been a long-term provider of Big Thought programming including curriculum integrated arts experience performances, residencies and master classes.

Cancellation Policy:	Should illness, inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances prevent the program from taking place as scheduled, artist will reschedule. Programs canceled by a school or community presenter after confirmation are subject to full payment. A $25 rescheduling fee will be charged if a schedule change is requested after a program has been confirmed.
After School Policy	A teacher or after school employee must remain with class at all times.
